The simplest most cost effective ways to cut your fuel bill, and requiring no change in driving habits, is to simply ensure that your tyres are at the correct pressures. Some petrol forecourts might charge you 20p for air, some are actually FREE. Do however, bear in mind the Auto Express Magazine report which discovered many petrol station guages were actually inaccurate so either check that they calibrate theirs regularly or get yourself one of our nifty accutire key-ring tyre pressure guages.
Drive more sensibly, this may increase your fuel efficiency by up to 30%. When you approach a junction allow the car to slow down naturally, dont't wait till you nearly at the junction and then jump on the brakes. When setting off accelerate more slowly and keep the revs down. Always drive in the highest gear possible but don't allow the engine to labour.
Remember a lighter car uses less fuel - get rid of all that clutter in the boot as extra weight means extra fuel used, and when filling up only half fill your tank, why weigh you car down with extra fuel simply to transport it to and from work!
Do shop around for cheaper petrol, but don't drive 10 miles out of your way!
Got cruise control? Use it especially on long journeys. It'll help save fuel.
Keep your air filters clean. Dirty air filters increase fuel consumption by a significant amount, so make sure you check and change them as often as possible. They're inexpensive and quite easy to fit in most cars. Full details should be in your owner's manual.
Don’t keep the engine running unnecessarily. Drive off as soon as you start up and switch off the engine as soon as you reach your destination. Air conditioning also uses an incredible amount of fuel so make sure it's turned off unless you really need it, but remember opening the windows also creates more drag hence also uses more fuel; seems there is a price to pay for nice weather!
Taking your roof rack off or roof bars when not in use will also substanially reduce drag again increasing mpg.
AND finally ensure you fuel system is in tip-top condition, once a year put a Rev-Tech 12,0000 Mile Fuel Treatment in your tank ensuring all your fuel lines and injectors are clean and working most efficiently and a Rev-Tech Instant Engine Treatment in your engine reducing noise, friction, heat and wear, meaning more MPG and most importantly more money in your wallet.
